Project 2C: The Mask

We were given the assignment on producing a full face mask of ourselves using papier-mache or equivalent and finished in poster colour. As such, we need to have the intention which is to produce a full face mask of ourselves. Therefore, we need to act. We work in pairs and in this assignment I’m working with Sua Yi Zheng from Architecture. Both of us are the actors and the rules in producing it are very simple. First of all, we need to produce a full face mask of ourselves using papier-mache and finished in poster colour. Besides that, we need to work in pairs and the process should be recorded in a maximum of 6 photos and being uploaded to our website. The mask produced should be wear on 24 July 2009, exhibit on 12 October 2009 and as prop on 16 October 2009. In addition, the site chosen is my room which is Desasiswa Tekun M05-5-56.

First of all, we tear the tissue paper into pieces and placed into a pail which was a quarter filled with water. Then, we leave it there for around 4 hours. After that, I decided to be the first to start. While lying on my bed, Sua Yi Zheng started to put a little bit by bit the papier-mache we produced before on my face. He tried to get a shape of my face. Then, it was leave to cool and harden for an hour. When I felt the mask can be taken off from my face, I took it down and placed on a plate. Next, we prepared our glue by mixing the tapioca powder with boiled water. Right after that, I placed the glue on the mask. When I finished putting the glue on it, I left it to cool and harden for the whole night and I repeated the same process in helping Sua Yi Zheng to produce his mask.

Sua was tearing the tissue into small pieces while placing into pail filled wit water.

Sua started putting tissue on my face.

When the tissue almost cover my full face.

I was cooling the mask while waiting for it to be harden.

We were making our own glue using tapioca powder.

That's how my mask looks like before being coloured.
